Job Summary

Job Description

Hi!

We are seeking a store manager for a coffee shop/boutique/venue startup in York, SC.

The ideal candidate has:

  • A high sense-of-urgency

  • A desire to build something great

  • A love of or willingness to love coffee

  • Experience in a variety of leadership positions

  • The willingness to work extremely hard for as long as needed until smart systems are in place

Experience that may be helpful:

  • Management

  • Experience in starting/growing/scaling a new business

  • Experience in failing repeatedly only to finally succeed despite pressure from family and friends to quit

None of the above Experiences are necessary for hire. All applicants (who persevere through the pre-interview) will be considered.

Work/Life Balance:

We believe in work/life balance. Our goal is for you to get the job done, not fulfill an arbitrary amount of hours for no reason.

Pay:

Pay structure will be aggressive and unconventional. Our current plan is 40,000/yr or 10% of gross revenue, whichever is greater. This means if the store grosses two million/yr, the salary is 200k/yr. Can the store gross two million? Only if we absolutely crush this thing. We see no reason why you should not make as much money as possible, provided the business is successful. If the business is not successful, you will still make as much money as possible, it will just be considerably less. Benefits to be discussed during the interview process.

Our Company:

Our company, Living in the Light Ltd Co, was started in 2016 as a passion project by Brooke. Brooke sold various products for various companies online and cultivated an online presence building others up in the same capacity. Brooke left her job in 2019 to pursue the business full time. We officially formed in 2020, when the business had grown enough for Brooke’s husband, Nick, to leave his job as well. The next step is to expand our umbrella into a brick-and-mortar retail location. There, we will bring our passion for amazing coffee to life.

Our Vision for the Store:

The Readery: A Coffee Shop and Boutique by Living in the Light will be a coffee shop and boutique, which also hosts vendors and events. In approximately 3000 square feet of an old warehouse at the heart of downtown York, we hope to create a space for people to exhale - an escape, where employees are happy and customers feel welcome and warm. Like if the feeling of getting lost in a book were a place.

Do you or are you willing to love coffee? Do you love books? Do you love people? Do you love the blistering dread/exhilaration of entreprenuership?

If you answered “No” to any of the above questions, this is not for you (seriously)!

We do promise:

  1. To treat you like a human.

  2. To do everything we can to help you succeed.

  3. To make things as fun as possible.

If hired, you will be assisting with everything needed to get the store open. This may include but is not limited to painting (a lot), moving furniture, making things look pretty, hiring staff, sourcing tea/pastries, communicating with vendors, learning how to make amazing espresso beverages, inventing recipes, creating a menu, cleaning, installing curtains, decorating, and figuring out how to make syrup.

If you’re still here somehow, please follow this link and complete this questionnaire in its entirety:

*Note: We may take up to two weeks to get back to you. However, we will respond to all candidates within two weeks of submission. If we do not select you for the role, we won’t keep you hanging. We’ll let you know as soon as possible.
