Position Description


 


Job Summary


The Minister of Music will serve on the church management team and be responsible for developing and directing a diverse, vibrant, innovative, and multi-sensory corporate worship culture for a church congregation of 2K+ members. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated track record of leadership in gospel music and ministry, be able to work as part of a cohesive team, be willing to devote full-time attention and service to SJBC, and have a commitment to Jesus Christ.

Technical Competencies



  • Able to carry out innovative ideas within the context of a team of staff and volunteers

  • Proficiency in organ, piano, voice, and music direction

  • Proficient as a lead vocalist

  • Skill in leading worship from an instrument (organ, piano and/or keyboard)

  • Skill in choir training and selection of appropriate music

  • Ability to both read music and play by ear

  • Familiarity with and knowledge base of traditional and contemporary worship music, as well as other music types and genres

  • Ability to choose music to enhance the spiritual message and blend songs together seamlessly

  • Supervise all aspects of audio/video provision


Experience and Training



  • At least three years’ experience as a Minister of Music or Director of Music at a large church (greater than 1,500 members)

  • At least 3+ years’ experience in Worship leadership at a large church (greater than 1,500 members)

  • Proven ability to recruit, build, train, and lead teams

  • Broad and deep understanding of the whole worship experience; purpose, individual parts, and how they work together

  • Familiarity with Baptist norms and protocols in the planning, organizing, and leading worship services



  • Demonstrated interpersonal, leadership, and administrative skills – including attention to details

  • Demonstrated verbal and writing skills

  • A track record of visionary Music Ministry leadership

  • Proven ability to work with adults and youth

  • Prior track record of involvement in multiple project management

  • Computer literacy appropriate to the demands of the position


Educational Expectations



  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music strongly preferred

  • Ability to teach choral parts

  • Have formal educational organ and piano training


Duties



  • Assist in planning of execution of weekly worship services. Choose traditional and contemporary worship and hymns that engage the congregation and support the reading and preaching of God’s Word

  • Lead weekly rehearsals to prepare for three Sunday services

  • Develop, conduct, and coordinate related various music programs in the church for all age groups.

  • Direct the music for worship services, special occasions to include, but not limited to funerals, weddings and revivals

  • Develop and maintain a band of musicians proficient in percussion, lead and base guitar, keyboard, piano, organ and all instruments required to produce excellence in gospel music.

  • Recruit, teach and train musicians to serve the congregation as a team with musical skill and humility

  • Engage in on-going volunteer recruitment and management

  • Serve the congregation in other areas of strength, such as youth, outreach, etc.

  • Develop and administer an annual budget for the music ministry in accordance with the financial policies of the church

  • Monitor the purchase, maintenance, and replacement of all music-related equipment, supplies, and instruments



  • Play for Sunday worship services, all rehearsals and performances of choirs, soloists, and other musical groups as needed

  • Supervise all aspects of audio/video provision

  • Arrange for a substitute in the event of a necessary absence

  • Provide an engaging atmosphere for youth in worship

  • Accompany Senior Pastor with a choir(s) in response to external invitations

  • Schedule and maintain office hours on a weekly basis

  • Attend required staff meetings

  • Prepare and present reports in staff, leadership and congregation meetings as needed

  • Attend workshops, seminars, and conferences for professional development


Expected Hours of Work


This position is full-time with benefits.  Work hours could vary.  40-50 hours per week, with a few longer weeks every year usually around the holiday seasons and special events. Work is done both inside the office, sanctuary (Sundays and some midweek services), as well as off-site when necessary.
